A Life of Cadence

I recently took a literal tumble. It was a sudden fall, ending with a sharp bump to the head and an enforced, immediate pause. As the initial shock wore off, a distinct realisation settled in: I need to slow down a bit...
We live in a culture that glorifies speed. We are conditioned to believe that momentum matters more than direction. But sitting there, I was reminded that moving fast without a rhythm is not just chaotic, it’s hazardous.
Around the same time, a friend shared a thought that perfectly captured what I was feeling. He told me his guiding word for the year is cadence. He isn’t chasing the elusive, often frustrating concept of "balance." Instead, he is looking for a life of cadence—a deliberate, rhythmic structure that supports both his highest goals and his personal well-being.
That resonated deeply. It is exactly what I am looking for, and it mirrors the exact conversations we are having behind closed doors with many of our clients.
The velocity of wealth
For highly successful families, the default setting is often acceleration and increase. The drive that built your wealth is powerful, but it can also be relentless. You become accustomed to complex deals, rapid decisions, and the continuous pursuit of growth.
Yet, at a certain level of success, the rules of the game must change. In a world currently defined by macroeconomic turmoil and constant noise, the realisation dawns: just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
Just because you can acquire another asset, overcomplicate your trust structures, or chase a fleeting market trend, does not mean it serves your family's ultimate purpose. Often, the resulting complexity just forces you to run faster on a heavier treadmill.
A rhythm for the next generation
This concept of cadence is perhaps a vital component of generational wealth transfer.
When we view financial planning through the lens of a family practice, our goal is not merely to pass down a balance sheet. It’s to pass down a sustainable framework—a cadence, if you will.
If you are living in a state of financial chaos or perpetual anxiety, that is the legacy you will inadvertently hand to your children.
A bespoke financial strategy acts as a metronome for your family's wealth. It introduces a deliberate rhythm. It means implementing clear governance, simplifying where possible, and establishing estate plans that provide peace rather than administrative burdens.
It’s about structuring your affairs so that your wealth supports your life, rather than your life being consumed by the management of your wealth.
The power of the pause
Sometimes, less truly is more. Slow is steady.
True financial sovereignty is the ability to dictate your own pace. It’s the quiet confidence of knowing your strategy is sound, allowing you to step off the track and actually experience the life you have worked so hard to fund.
As you look ahead, I invite you to examine the pace of your own financial and personal life. Are you moving with a sustainable rhythm, or are you simply running fast?
Here’s to moving away from the chaotic. Here’s to developing cadence.
